“Ah,” said Cam, “so we met the ‘marmots’ last night. Now we’ve met the ‘eagles.’”

Hannah shrugged. “That’s what I figured, anyway.”

Mom nodded as she looked at them through the rearview mirror. “That poem. You recited some of it last night. Where did you hear that, again? You can sit up. The ‘eagles’ are gone.”

Hannah stretched as she and Cam straightened in their seats.

“The Blue Bathrobe Man. When I was in my hiding place and he found me the first time, he said this whole big long poem. I can’t remember all of it. Just bits and pieces. It had all this stuff about treasures and traitors and how the Fànes will rise once more. It was kind of cool and kind of creepy both at the same time.”

“Cool! Maybe you should write it down as you remember it. Then we can ask Dad about it when he gets back,” Cam suggested.

Hannah’s tummy gave a little nervous twist, but she pulled the sketch pad out of her backpack and dug around for a pencil.

In the front seat, Mom pointed out the window to their right. A huge cemetery with a fancy metal sign arching over the entrance declared itself, “Hillsboro Pioneer Cemetery.”

“Are there actual pioneers buried there?” Hannah asked, straining against the seatbelt to see the headstones.

“Absolutely. If you watch closely, you can see David Hill’s headstone.”
